Shared Ground: Settlement Practice with Indigenous Communities
Description
Join us for the next virtual International Refugee Integration and Settlement Exchange (IRISE) event, a global gathering of organisations, groups and individuals involved in supporting refugees arriving through resettlement and other complementary pathways.
This IRISE Virtual Exchange will explore how Indigenous knowledge, practices and communities intersect with refugee resettlement, and the role that settlement providers and supporters can, do or should play in connecting newcomers with Indigenous peoples, histories and lands.
At a time when the world is becoming increasingly fractured, the parallels between the experiences of refugees and Indigenous peoples are clearer than ever. This event will be an opportunity to explore these intersections and discuss meaningful and practical steps to connect those who have always been here in order to help those who have just arrived.
At this gathering you will:
Hear from thought-leaders, Indigenous representatives and practitioners about what is happening in Australia, Canada and New Zealand, including:
Deena Yako, Director of Community Engagement, Refugee Council of Australia
Chris Frieson, Chief Operating Officer, Immigrant Services Society of British Columbia, Canada
Tami Pierce, proud Tsimshian woman and Indigenous Advisor, Canada
Gail Moore, Kaiarahi (Team Lead), Purapura Whetū, New Zealand
Aklilu Habteghiorghis, Community Engagement Lead, New Zealand Red Cross
Maria Dimopoulos, Chief Executive Officer, Settlement Council of Australia
And more to be announced…
Have an opportunity to engage with peers in other countries and share ideas and what you have tried or seen work well, and how we can and should engage with the Indigenous peoples of the lands where we are supporting refugees to settle.
