Sharon Elaine Nobtet
Event description
The Sharon Elaine Nobtet is the ever-evolving brainchild of trumpeter, flugelhorn player and vocalist Sharon Nobs, affectionately known as Shazza. The concept is simple: Sharon leads, and the Nobtet are whoever joins her on stage to bring the fire. Every incarnation of the band is a little different, but always unapologetically bold, full of heart, and overflowing with energy.
For this special show at JMI Live, Sharon has assembled an all-star, all-female lineup featuring some of Meanjin's finest musicians:
Helen Russel on double bass, Peta Wilson on piano, Katie Randall on drums, and a horn section that absolutely roars with Liv Marton on alto saxophone, Cassie Whitehead on tenor saxophone, Bec Olek on baritone saxophone, and Zoe Atkinson on trombone.
Together, this powerhouse collective dives into a mix of original compositions and fearless arrangements, blending the swing and soul of classic jazz with modern grit and groove. Expect fiery solos, driving rhythms, and a whole lot of personality — this isn't background jazz, it's a full-bodied, high-energy celebration of musicianship and female creativity in full flight.
So grab a drink, settle in, and get ready for The Sharon Elaine Nobtet — a band that proves jazz can be powerful, playful, and gloriously unpredictable.
