SHEBANG! sessions: DRAWING WITH INK 2026

Learn to draw confidently using traditional pen and ink. Discover all the possibilities of a method loved by Ronald Searle, Yuko Shimizu, Molly Crabapple, Moebius, Kim Jung Gi and so many more. We’ll look at classical dip pen and Indian ink, the best brushes, nibs and paper for inking, and experiment with making your own brushes and cool textures using found objects. We’ll also uncover some of the history of ink drawing – from centuries ago to today!

Cost: $300

Dates: Saturdays, November 7, 14, 21, 28

Time: 3:30-5:15pm

WEEK 1: November 7 Introduction to the history of illustration: we practice simple line techniques including hatching, stippling, and describing the three-dimensional form.

WEEK 2: November 14 More advanced techniques: using brush, drybrush, dip pens, different inks, intro to paper. We learn to depict shadows and light and try out some ink wash.

WEEK 3: November 21 Experimental brushes: we make some brushes ourselves and use found objects to make our lines/blotches/spatters.

WEEK 4: November 28 Bringing it all together: we create a finished piece using all the techniques we learnt along the way.

Instructor: Rebecca L. Stewart is a local illustrator and comic book artist who loves drawing in ink more than anything. She first honed her drawing skills in 2D animation studios in the ‘90s and also taught drawing and animation in Singapore. See more of her work here.

Participants: Ages 16+ - all drawing levels and abilities welcomed – beginners to advanced.

What to bring/wear

Come prepared to get a bit dirty so bring an old shirt or apron. All other materials are provided. BYO drinks and snacks if you need nibbles.

We thank you for supporting our small creative businesses: Ink Drawing 2026 is run by a 1-person business and facilitated by a small family business. If you request a refund or seek to reschedule outside of our terms, you’re asking us to absorb the cost of venue hire and materials.

1. No refunds, credits, or transfers once the class has commenced.

2. If you cancel less than 7 days prior to the class commencing, no refund will be issued.

3. All other cancellations requests/transfers will be considered individually. If we can fill your place before the classes start, we’ll process a full refund minus a $50 admin fee.
