The Queensfiddle Rules (1658AD)
Fair Start: The battle begins with both contestants in a neutral stance, bows down, at the command of a referee. Any premature notes will result in a forfeiture of the first round.
Touch Gloves, Touch Bows: Before the first note is played, contestants must ceremonially touch bows at the center, acknowledging mutual respect in an acknowledgment of skill and sportsmanship. Failure or refusal to comply results in a 10-point penalty.
No Below-the-Belt Playing: All notes must be played above the belt. Any breach will lead to a caution or point deduction.
No Holding or Grappling: Contestants may not hold or physically interfere with their opponent’s bow or violin. The use of elbows or knees is strictly prohibited.
Four-Octave Limit: Each player is restricted to no more than four octaves in a single run. Exceeding this range will result in immediate disqualification from that round.
Rhythmic Neutrality: Both players must maintain the agreed-upon tempo. Any attempt to disrupt the rhythm, such as unexpected accelerandos, is subject to a warning.
No Fiddling Around: Distraction tactics, such as excessive foot stomping or making exaggerated facial expressions, are prohibited. Points will be deducted for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Jab, Hook, and Arpeggio: All improvisations must be structured with clear, defined phrases, flashy arpeggios, and clean resolutions. Wild playing without form will not be scored.
Shoulder-rest Etiquette: Adjusting mid-battle is strictly forbidden. Any tampering with the instrument will result in forfeiture of the round.
No Out-of-Bounds: Players must stay within the designated performance area. Any stepping out of bounds results in a warning.
Rosin Interval: Players may request a 30-second rosin interval once per match. Excessive rosining outside this time will be penalized.
Score and Retire: At the end of each round, players retreat to their corners for feedback from their seconds. Points are tallied and announced by the referee.
Points Scoring: Points are awarded for clean execution, precision, creativity, and showmanship. Wild and uncontrolled playing will lead to point deductions.
Standing Eight Count: If one player is overwhelmed by a particularly intense passage and stops playing, the referee will administer a standing eight bar count in time. Failure to continue results in a technical knockout.
Victory by Knockout: Victory is achieved by a musical knockout, wherein one contestant fails to respond within eight bars after a superior phrase is delivered.
Round of Applause: At the end of the match, both players must acknowledge the audience and each other with a bow. Failure to do so results in immediate disqualification.
Encore Only by Demand: In the event of a tie, an encore round is allowed, but only if the audience demands it. The encore is sudden death—the first player to falter loses.
