There have been a number of recent developments about tikanga in the law, with Te Aka Matua o te Ture | The Law Commission’s study paper, He Poutama, the most recent example. In this session, we will look at some fundamental aspects of Te Ao Māori and its relevance to both the practical and legal issues arising in the role of in-house counsel.

Presenter Chris Merrick (Te Whakapiko o Ngāti Manaia, Ngāti Wai, Ma’ufanga, Niua) is a partner at Meredith Connell. He is an experienced litigator, and legal advisor on major public and private inquiries, he leads a team of Māori and Pacific lawyers that provide legal and cultural advisory services to private and public sector clients. A strong collaborator, he often works across practice areas, alongside others in Meredith Connell’s specialist teams. Chris is a member of Te Hunga Rōia Māori and the Pacific Lawyers Association, and has acted for Te Hunga Rōia on matters before the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. Whatever the project, Chris brings his unique perspective to his legal and advisory work. He is a speaker of te reo Māori.
