Event description

We're excited to launch this brand-new course — a first-time offer created in response to popular client demand!

Course Overview

This is a practical course that will take you through an introduction to survival analysis. We will explore different models used to analyse time-to-event data, including:

  • Kaplan-Meier estimator

  • Cox proportional-hazards model

  • Competing risk regression

You will learn how to use these models to compare outcomes between groups, how to decide which model is suited for your analysis needs. We will discuss the underlying assumptions of the different survival models, how to check them, and what to do if they are violated.

Prerequisites

We assume knowledge of introductory statistics, including principles of study design, the concept of a p-value, the concept of a confidence interval, the basics of null-hypothesis testing, and how to interpret simple regression models. All of these are covered in our Introduction to Statistics courses. We encourage you to enroll in our Introduction to R course, August 25 and watch the Seminar Recording below before attending this course.

Course requirements: You will need to bring and use your own computer during the workshop.
Presenters and Expertise: Nick Olsen Statistical Consultant and Luz Palacios-Derflingher Biostatistician, UNSW Stats Central
Date: 21-23 October 2025

Time: 9.30am - 4.00pm, each day

Delivery Mode: In-Person ONLY

Location: Biological Sciences Building

You will receive a certificate of completion for the course.

You will be expected to watch this SEMINAR on study design and statistical principles (samples and populations, confounding, statistical inference) ahead of the workshop.
