Sicilian Salottu Session #3 Juornu di li Muorti
Event description
On the night between the 1st and 2nd of November, the souls of the deceased return to visit their loved ones. But as bedtime approaches, the children do not fear what might lurk in shadows. This visitation is met with eager anticipation of what toys and treats ghosts might leave behind. Hidden under beds, wrapped in blankets, stashed in cupboards, the traces of our ancestors manifest as gifts for us to seek and to find.
And once the sweets have been savoured and the toys discovered, families repay the visit. Young and old visit the cemetery for a picnic that spans generations and realms. We tend to graves and honour the cycle of life and death with stories.
Joins us for an exploration of rituals and stories, honouring life and death and what exists between. Featuring a selection of short films, an exploration of Sicilian folk magic by Rose Inserra, author of Italian Folk Magic, a few tales from the grave and a complimentary sampling of Ossa dei Morti (Bones of the Dead).
