SideFX Presents "The Art of FX" Panel Discussion/Q&A


Event description

The SideFX Group Art FXhibition, an art exhibition which showcases the personal and professional work of Australia's practical makeup and creature effects for film and television, is proud to announce an exciting new element to it's annual 4-day event. Come join us Saturday, 7th from 1-2pm at Ambush Gallery, 4a James St. Waterloo, NSW for a Panel Discussion and Q&A as we delve into the "art" of special effects makeup and creature design with professional effects artists: Adam Johansen and Damian Martin of Odd Studio, Mariel McClorey, Chad Atkinson and Dane Hallett as they share insights, tell stories and answer questions about their craft. Don't miss out on this chance to connect with fellow enthusiasts and industry leaders while being surrounded by the amazing artwork of over 30 of Australia's film and television practical effects artists. Conducted by community engagement facilitator, Jen Guice, this event is sure to entertain, inform and inspire.

With a celebrated history including Oscar and BAFTA wins as well as numerous other awards, Odd Studio excel in the art of character design, prosthetic makeup, creature effects, animatronics, props, and models. The company’s founders, Adam Johansen and Damian Martin, have been at the forefront of their industry for more than 30 years on an extensive range of local and international projects including Evil Dead Rise, The Artful Dodger, Thor: Love and Thunder, Extraction 1&2, Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, Wolf like me series 1&2, The Invisible Man, Little Monsters, Aquaman, Peter Rabbit, Alien Covenant, Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Men Tell No Lies, Gods of Egypt, Mad Max 4 Fury Road, Farscape series 1-4 and many more. 

Mariel McClorey

Originally from Long Island, New York, and now based in Sydney, Mariel has strong fine-arts background and has worked professionally in film, TV, fashion, and theatre since 2005 with credits including: Furiosa, Nine Perfect Strangers, Shang-Chi and the legend of the Ten Rings, Wyrmwood: Apocalypse, Thor: Love and Thunder, Nekrotronic, Thor:Ragnarok,  Cleverman season 1 and 2 (ABC tv), Hacksaw Ridge, Mad Max Fury Road, Wyrmwood:Road of the Dead, The Wolverine, Unbroken, I, Frankenstein and more.

Chad Atkinson

Chad Atkinson is a veteran Special Effects Artist and Emmy Award winner from Los Angeles, who has over 28 years of experience in the film and television industry. Film projects include : Starship Troopers, Alien Resurrection, My Favorite Martian, X-Files, The Movie, Deep Blue Sea, Bowfinger, Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, Dune, HBO's The Pacific, Killer Elite, Patrick, The Loved Ones, Terra Nova and The Hobbit to name a few. Chad also runs a series very successful advanced prosthetics and makeup effects workshops from his studio in Queensland. 

Dane Hallett

Always keen to get into some good conversation about anything "industry", Dane jumped at the chance to join our panel. As an illustrator, designer and director, Dane's enthusiasm for art and film really come through in his work with projects including Furiosa, A Mad Max Saga, Extraction 1&2, Thor: Love and Thunder, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Mortal Combat, Aquaman, Pacific Rim, Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Men Tell No Lies, Alien Covenant, Hacksaw Ridge, Gods of Egypt, Mad Max: Fury Road ..as well as his directorial debut, Rancour. 

The panel discussion will take place Saturday, 7th of September, 1-2pm, during regular gallery hours (12-4pm).  While at the discussion, enjoy the gallery and the fantastic personal and professional artwork submitted by the amazingly talented group of artists working in the field today. These artists include special makeup effects artists, prop makers, specialty costumers, animatronic engineers, painters, concept designers, creature designers, technicians and crafts people with work including sculpture, paintings, costumes, replicas, casts, props, miniatures and dioramas. While some work is personal, there will also be work that has actually been used in film and television productions. 

Both the gallery and the discussion are FREE and open to the public, however there will be limited available seats for the panel discussion so make sure to reserve yours today!
