SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT 2 - ARE YOU ON SANTA'S NAUGHTY LIST???
Event description
GARBAGE DAY! Its time for CHRISTMAS IN JULY and we’re spending it the traditional way – with a SANTA CLAUS THEMED SLASHER FILM – 1987s “Silent Night, Deadly Night 2.”
Poorly made 1980s slasher films are a dime a dozen so it takes something truly special to catch the eye of the discerning curators at RAD, BAD or MAD. And, while filmmaking is a team effort and a communal collaboration, the thing that makes this film sing is the completely UNHINGED portrayal by lead actor ERIC FREEMAN.
You may never have heard of this film but odds are, if you are online at all, you’ve seen the meme – a man in a sweater shouts GARBAGE DAY and shoots a rando. The delivery, the pacing, the EYEBROWS – it’s the perfect random meme. This film is rife with moments like this, where bizarre creative decisions– again, I cant emphasis how unhinged the lead actor is – lead to scene after scene of transcendent awfulness. (IMDB trivia notes that he flexes his eyebrows ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY TIMES during the movie.)
Now, you may have noticed that little numero duo in the title but don’t be worried – this movie is a TWOFER as the first film is recounted by our boy ERIC during the flashback heavy first half. Never mind that Eric’s character was a baby in the first film and was not present for many of the scenes he describes – if you come at me with those sorts of questions I’m going to ask you to leave.
Make no mistake about it – this film is nasty and sleezy. Massively controversial at release, it inspired critics Siskel and Ebert to ACTUALLY NAME AND SHAME the creators on air for the crime of GASP showing a psycho SANTA. Won’t someone think of the children!?
I don’t care about the kids but I care about you guys and so I invite you to join us for CHRISTMAS in JULY when we find out what it takes to get on SANTA’S NAUGHTY LIST – and whether SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT 2 is RAD, BAD or MAD!
HOST DETAILS: We will be at NEWSTEAD SQUASH and TENNIS COURTS. The venue is licensed - BYO is NOT allowed but the BAR is open!
