WHEN: 2pm, Sunday September 1st 2024

THE PERFORMERS:

Susan Blake performs with passion, beauty, and energy and is truly a great musician and cellists. One of Australia's most influential and respected lecturers in cello and chamber music at the University of Sydney Conservatorium of Music, she was appointed senior lecturer in 2010 and regularly presents at summer courses in Europe, Australia, and Hong Kong. A frequent soloist with orchestras and ensembles in Australia and Europe, she has recorded for ABC Radio, ABC Classics, Sounds Australia, and Tall Poppies.

With an extensive interest in 18th-century music, she has performed with other original instrumentalists, is a founding member of the Ensemble of the Classic Era, and has toured extensively for Musica Viva Australia, appearing at all the major music festivals. She plays upon a cello made by Giovanni Grancino in Milan in 1701.

In her early years, she was a student Graduate of the Year from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, after winning the prestigious ABC Concerto Competition (Elgar cello concerto with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra) and a national tour. Awarded a coveted Churchill Fellowship, she completed postgraduate studies at the Basel Music Academy, studying with the legendary Heinrich Schiff, then pursued further specialist study in baroque and classical cello with Anner Bylsma in Holland.

"A player not to be missed, a true artist of the instrument."

John Martin is a colourful, consummate, engaging, and vibrant performer with a career of great variety. He is as at home working with stars as he is presenting educational workshops. He has collaborated for years in recital and broadcast with Harden’s own Deborah de Graaff, flautist Leah Lock as “Power Of Three,” this concert’s star cellist Susan Blake, legendary singers David Hobson, Marina Prior, Mark Vincent, The Australian Tenors, The Ten Sopranos, violin virtuoso Vov Dylan, Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Amelia Farrugia, Jane Rutter, Yvonne Kenny, Jacqueline Porter, Greta Bradman, Jose Carbo, Geoffrey Chard, Peter Cousens, Miriam Margolyes, Penny Hackforth-Jones, and many others.

Not only heard on the concert platform as soloist and co-performer, John is an accomplished composer, regularly heard on ABC Classic FM, MBS Networks, and in studio recordings on labels such as Wirripang, Elkwood/Sony, and Move Records, Melbourne.

“Relax into your most comfortable armchair, preferably with a desirable beverage to hand, and listen through this exposé of delectable piano music.” (Gwen Bennett)

“John Martin’s expert pianism and unerring sense of rhythm ensures an excellent hour of aural entertainment and delight.”

The whole performance was enhanced by John’s masterful performance on the keyboard—just listening to this virtuoso brings the piano alive. (The Theatre Association of South Australia)
