Silvia Tarozzi + Deborah Walker (Italy) / Lizzy Welsh / Erkki Veltheim
Event description
Anthony Pateras has invited acclaimed international guests Silvia Tarozzi (violin) & Deborah Walker (cello) to perform two nights in Castlemaine/Djaara as part of their debut Australian tour. Playing together for over 20 years, the duo's music is characterized by a profound interplay, a focus on the acoustic qualities of their instruments' sound, and a search for new possibilities in tuning and gesture. They've worked directly with some of the world's most important living composers such as Eliane Radigue, Pascal Criton and Eyvind Kang, and have toured the world over. This is their second performance in Castlemaine, as part of a two-day feature.
At the Red Hill, Tarozzi/Walker will present Canti di guerra, di lavoro e d’amore (songs of war, work and love), a contemporary re-interpretation of feminist folksongs of northern Italy. These songs date back to the Second World War, but some of them have older roots. The melodies and especially the lyrics have been transformed over time through oral transmission and adapted to different social, working and historical contexts. This work has released on the prestigious New York label Unseen Worlds, to widespread critical accalim, named as one of the best albums of 2022 by The Wire.
Opening the evening will be Castlemaine's own early music string virtuoso Lizzy Welsh, performing new work for viola d'amore & electronics, and national treasure Erkki Veltheim, performing new works for violin/electronics in between engagements with Tasmanian Symphony and the country's leading indigenous singer/songwriters.
Pre-sales are $25+bf or $30 on the door. Attendees can buy a two-night pass for $45+bf to see the duo's 1st performance in Castlemaine at Punctum's ICU the previous evening.
This concert is supported by Fondazione Ater, Emilia-Romagna.
