Simon London and the Spirits
Event description
The Spirits are back at Gatsbys!
After a short break, great southern singer-songwriter Simon London is hitting the road again with his band Simon London + the Spirits to launch their latest single ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’, the title track from their latest album.
The album - with glowing reviews from critics - has re-established Simon London + the Spirits as a standout south-coast act, producing premier music and renowned for their powerful live shows.
The new single – a picaresque montage of shared tour stories and band life laid over a catchy blues groove and earworm chorus – drills right to the heart of the album’s theme; but this time squaring up to loss in a more piss-take than woe kind of way.
Deliberately alluding to that giant Simple Minds song (think Judd Nelson, the Breakfast Club and general high school delinquency), Don’t You Forget About Me turns loss on its head, as a nostalgic celebration of the great, the not-so-great and the tragicomic life shared between two creative mates over a couple of decades of touring.
With a significant back-catalogue and plenty of tour anecdotes to delve into, Spirits shows journey through beautiful ambience, driving rock or gritty blues - the band don’t fit neatly into genres but instead let the song and the moment take them and you, where it will.
Join Simon London + the Spirits in the striking environs of Gatsbys Skyline as they play a full show of songs and stories, mining some standouts and favourites from the band’s four albums and of course, their new single. While the new album has been enjoying some national airplay, it’s really only on the live stage where the power of this three-piece can truly be reckoned.
What the press has said:“This latest album (Don’t You Forget About Me) is a master stroke in a long and accomplished career.“
“This bloke could well be a contender for one of the top-shelf male vocalists making music in Australia right now. It’s a range you rarely hear – some have soft folk troubadour vulnerability, some have earth shattering power & vibrato; London does both -and makes it sound easy.Extraordinary vocal prowess… his voice is an anthemic powerhouse that swirls and builds and can lift the roof off any venue” Katia Smith: Gold MX
“Simon London himself is a brilliant vocalist.. his ability to make the guitar sound great is sublime… and with the backing of the Spirits every performance is special. They’re a force to be reckoned with, both on stage and in the studio” Oliver Blazevic: Goldroom Music
