Simply Synopsis with Michelle Somers

This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

Take the stress out of synopsis creation.

Learn how to construct an engaging and fresh synopsis containing all vital information while hooking the reader and maintaining tension and emotion.

Simply Synopsis formulates the building blocks of the synopsis—the orientation, the major turning points, the resolution and the conclusion—piecing them together in a way that is engaging and exciting for the reader. It covers tone, vocabulary, point of view and pacing. It looks at backstory—how and where does this fit in? Secondary characters and secondary plots—yes or no? World-building—how much is enough?

Throughout this two-hour workshop - designed for Adaptable applicants and open to all Queensland Writers Centre members - you will gain strategies to analyse your story and extract the key elements to include in your synopsis, whilst learning how to determine what plot points and events to leave out.

The Simply Synopsis strategy is simple and straightforward, a step-by-step process that makes the daunting task of synopsis creation much less daunting.

Complimentary access to this workshop is available to all Adaptable 2022/23 applicants - please select the free Adaptable 2022/23 Applicant Admission ticket type. Other Queensland Writers Centre members and the public may attend with a paid ticket.

Format

This is a live stream only workshop held as part of the Adaptable 2022/23 program; it will be live streamed solely to an online audience. It is a level 1 course for writers of all levels. A 7-day replay will be made available to participants.

About Michelle

Michelle Somers is a bookworm from way back. An ex-Kiwi who now calls Australia home, she’s a professional killer and matchmaker, a storyteller and a romantic. Words are her power and her passion. Her heroes and heroines always get their happy ever after, but she’ll put them through one hell of a journey to get there.

Michelle lives in Melbourne with her real-life hero and three heroes in the making. As well as Emerald, a black furry feline who thinks she’s a dog, and Cammie, a goofy rescue pup. Her debut novel, Lethal in Love won the RWA’s 2013 Valerie Parv Award and 2016 Romantic Book of the Year.

Michelle teaches writing craft in simple and easy to follow steps. Her Simply Synopsis strategy has revolutionised the way writers craft a synopsis, and now her Characterisation Through Narration strategy is helping writers to master the art of strong, character-driven storytelling.
