Single Piece Plaster Mould Making

Overview

This workshop offers an introduction to creating single-piece plaster mould, focusing on both the theory and practical aspects of the process. Participants will gain hands-on experience in mould-making techniques used in ceramics, learn how to prepare the right materials, and discover how to troubleshoot common challenges.

What will be covered in this course?

Workshop Objectives

  • Introduce participants to the fundamentals of single-piece plaster mould making.
  • Teach the process of preparing and working with moulding materials.
  • Provide participants with a clear understanding of the steps involved in making a single-piece mould, from preparation to casting.
  • Enable participants to troubleshoot common issues and make adjustments during the mould-making process.
  • Provide hands-on experience so participants can create their own functional moulds to take home.

The workshop will cover the following key areas:

  • Introduction to moulds: Overview of the importance of moulds in ceramics.
  • Materials & Tools: Explanation of the materials needed (clay, slip, moulding tools) and their functions.
  • Step-by-Step Mould Making Process: Demonstration of the process for creating a single-piece plaster mould.
  • Troubleshooting Common Issues: Tips on dealing with common mould-making challenges.
  • Hands-On Practice: Participants will create their own mould, with guided assistance throughout the process.

Approach

The workshop will be taught through a combination of demonstrations, individual practice, and group discussions. The facilitator will demonstrate each step of the process, followed by hands-on time for participants to apply what they’ve learned. Participants will have the opportunity to work at their own pace, with the facilitator available for one-on-one guidance and troubleshooting. The workshop will be highly interactive, with a focus on practical application.

THIS CLASS IS FOR:

This workshop is designed for anyone interested in incorporating plaster mould making into their pottery practice. It is ideal for intermediate and advanced potters who are looking to expand their skills by learning to create their own plaster moulds.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Materials Provided:
All necessary materials and tools will be provided for the workshop, including:

  • Buckets
  • work surfaces
  • cast model
  • Markers and measuring tools
  • Pottery plaster
  • Wet/Dry sandpaper and rubbing alcohol
  • Cottle, clay, and tape
  • Gloves and N95 dust mask for safety

Participants should bring:

  • Clothes that can get messy
  • Lunch
  • Any personal tools they wish to use

TIME: 10 am - 3.00 pm

DURATION:  Full day with break for lunch at 12.30 pm (45 mins)

About the Tutor

Luke is an accomplished ceramic artist and educator with a deep passion for pottery. Holding a Diploma of Ceramics and a Cert IV in Adult Education, Luke brings both expert knowledge and a strong educational background to his classes. His experience spans wheel throwing, handbuilding, and slipcasting, with work encompassing both functional and sculptural ceramics.

Luke’s teaching philosophy is centred on fostering creativity and skill development in a supportive environment. His approachable and patient demeanour makes learning pottery accessible and enjoyable for students of all levels. Whether guiding beginners through their first pinch pot or helping advanced students refine their techniques, Luke is committed to nurturing each individual’s artistic journey.
