Event description

Established in 1995, the Sir Anthony Mason Lecture celebrates outstanding contributions to the legal profession and is regarded as one of the most highly anticipated and prestigious events of the year. The Sir Anthony Mason Lecture will be seeing its first return since COVID on 31 October 2023 at 5:30 pm.

The topic of this year's lecture is 'The New Constitutional Scholarship in Australia.' It is inspired by Professor Adrienne Stone’s High Court Lecture last year, which called attention to a trend in recent constitutional scholarship to examine and explain uniquely Australian aspects of our constitutional structure and tradition. The lecture seeks to continue Professor Adrienne Stone's discourse on that front.

Each year, we invite a distinguished speaker to discuss a pertinent legal issue within the area of Constitutional Law. Previously, we have had the honour of hosting speakers such as the Hon Justice Robert French, the Hon Justice Michael Kirby, Professor Gillian Triggs, Dr Stephen Donaghue QC, the Hon Sir Anthony Mason himself, and most recently, the Hon Justice Susan Kenny. This year, the lecture will be delivered by the Honourable Justice Stephen Gageler AC.
