Instrumentation Maintenance Strategies for Whole of life

Instrumentation is a major part of most industrial processes.

A comprehensive maintenance program is critical to attaining long-term reliable performance of instrumentation systems and field Instrument with good maintenance strategies.

Periodic device calibration, preventive maintenance, and testing allow potential problems to be identified before they can cause mission failure. Prompt corrective maintenance assures reliability by minimizing downtime of redundant components.

The Industrial Instrumentation systems should be part of the overall preventive maintenance (PM) program for the facility.

Be involved

This event is a Common Interest Work Group and will involve contribution and discussions by all attending to discuss and share your experience and knowledge so together we can all benefit from joint knowledge.

Michael Dunne - Process and Instrumentation Principal, Asset Management Services, Melbourne Water

Melbourne Water are in its formative phases of developing how to manage the Instrumentation Asset Class, from a whole of life perspective.

Michael will kick off the discussion with a presentation on their current progress in Asset Class Handbook and specifically on the Instrumentation Asset Class.

How are you maintaining instrumentation?

Please come along and contribute your knowledge to this topic and together we will learn from each other.

Below are some discussion points as a prompt:

  • Instrument Classifications
    • Conventional Instruments - Pressure Tx, flowmeter, etc.
    • Analytical Instruments - Chlorine, Fluoride, pH, etc.
  • Maintenance Strategies - How often, what factors, criticality?
    • Preventive Maintenance -
      • Time Based - frequency, determining factors, how does criticality affect
      • Performance based
      • Shutdown based
    • Periodic System Testing
    • Calibration - frequency, Certificate
  • Renewable Strategies -
    • Time
    • RTF
    • New Technology
    • High Cost vs low Cost Instrumentation
    • Condition - Asset Condition Assessment: Are spares still available?, is technical support still available
  • Assessing new equipment - Vendor Checklist & User Checklist
  • Training - Operation and Maintenance
  • Operator tasks vs Technician tasks
  • Test Equipment and tools
  • Software - configuration and program
  • Spare parts - Stock, JIT
  • Assessing new equipment - Vendor check list & User Checklist
  • Manufacturer Recommended Maintenance?
  • Analysis of PM Tasks - Triggering maintenance
  • Safety Instrument Systems (SIS), Safety Integrity Level (SIL)
  • Decommissioning and Disposal

We look forward to seeing you there.
