Meeanee Road Overbridge
Description
NAWIC Hawke’s Bay members are invited behind the scenes to see progress on the Meeanee Road overbridge, part of the Hawke’s Bay Expressway improvements.
The Hawke’s Bay Expressway is carrying more freight and commuters every year, with the Kennedy Road and Meeanee Road intersections becoming significant pinch points for congestion and safety.
The project is delivering two new four-span, two-lane overbridges to separate these intersections from expressway traffic — improving traffic flow, reducing congestion and delivering safer journeys across the network.
For this visit, we'll be focusing on the Meeanee Road structure, where all abutments and piers have now completed their Stage 1 pours and the first 16 beams have been placed.
What you'll see:
Construction of an overbridge alongside live expressway and local road traffic involves significant coordination across piling, earthworks, structural works, temporary works and traffic management.
During the visit, we'll take a closer look at:
Stage 1 concrete works completed to both abutments and all three piers
16 single hollow core bridge beams placed between Pier C and Abutment E
The temporary works design and planning behind the beam lifts
The challenges of delivering major structural works around live traffic
