Sir Mark Dunajtschik Mental Health Centre
Description
The new Sir Mark Dunajtschik Mental Health Centre in Lower Hutt is a major investment in mental health infrastructure for the Wellington region. Construction commenced in June 2025 and this in-progress site visit is a rare opportunity to see a facility like this up close.
The purpose-built facility will provide 34 adult acute inpatient beds — 10 more than the existing facility — and is designed to support modern models of inpatient mental health care. The centre will provide safer, more therapeutic environments for people experiencing acute mental health distress, while giving clinical and support teams facilities better suited to delivering contemporary care.
The project is an important regional investment, aiming to improve patient and whānau outcomes, provide more appropriate care environments, and help reduce pressure on emergency departments.
NAWIC site visit focus: The project provides an opportunity to explore the delivery of a complex healthcare facility, with particular interest in construction, design, safety, services coordination and the creation of a therapeutic environment for patients, whānau and staff.
