Sludge Minimisation Facility - Te Whare Wai Para Nuku

The Wellington Sludge Minimisation Facility - Te Whare Wai Para Nuku is a once in a generation transformative infrastructure project aimed at providing a long-term, sustainable, and resilient approach to the treatment of Wellington City's wastewater biosolids.

The project is a world-class facility, the first of its type in New Zealand, and uses a mixture of pressure, heat and biological processes to reduce the amount of sewage sludge created through the normal wastewater treatment process and turn it into a safe, reusable product. The reduction in sludge volumes of up to 80%, not only reduces the volume of sludge entering the landfill, but also reduces carbon emissions by capturing biogas and utilising it as a fuel source to provide both heat and power in the treatment facility.

Parking Location: Note that parking is limited and so we encourage car-sharing or public transport where possible. Please park in the red area marked ‘Contractor Parking’. It is easiest to access the parking area from Freight Drive. Once parked, visitors should follow the yellow dotted line to the Sign-In Office.
