Paisley has worked various conservation and field biology roles in recent years. Most recognize her from her volunteer community outreach work to help her neighbors feel more comfortable around and better identify local reptiles.

This is a Desert Ecology & Conservation Certificate class worth .5 units.

Introduction to 20 species of snakes found throughout Joshua Tree National Park, the Morongo Basin, and the Coachella Valley. Students will learn to distinguish local venomous species from non-venomous species, and how to best practice safety during Southern California’s extended “Snake Season.” The course also includes information on how to improve your chances of seeing snakes in nature and an overview of ethical snake spotting. After the lecture, students will take a short, guided hike to practice snake spotting in the field. There will additionally be an opportunity to meet the instructor’s ambassador animals for a hands-on introduction to local species.

All required items participants need to bring for the course: Guests are encouraged to bring water, snacks, and appropriate clothing for a short hike around the Nature Center.

Desert Institute offers some classes for credit through UC Riverside Extension. If you complete 12 units of our 400-level classes, you will earn a Desert Ecology & Conservation Certificate! If you take this class, you will earn .5 units towards a Desert Ecology & Conservation Certificate.
