Build Your Own Traditional Ojibwa Snowshoes

Spend the day learning a traditional craft and weaving your own pair of wooden snowshoes!

In this hands-on workshop, participants will assemble and lace their own pair of traditional Ojibwa-style snowshoes using a kit from Northern Toboggan Co. The kit features white ash wooden frames and nylon lacing.

The Ojibwa snowshoe is known for its distinctive pointed toe and tail and practical design for traveling through snow. Participants will work step by step with help from the instructor.

Space is limited. Advance registration is required.

Snowshoe Size Selection*

Please select your snowshoe size when purchasing your ticket. Choose based on your body weight plus the approximate weight of any winter gear or pack you would normally carry.

Youth — 9" × 36"
Age 6 to approximately 120 lbs.

Small — 10" × 48"
Age 8 to approximately 140 lbs.

Medium — 11" × 54"
Approximately 130–240 lbs.

Large — 12" × 60"
Recommended for those approximately 6 feet tall and 210 lbs. or more.

*Roughly match snowshoe size to your body weight plus the weight of any pack.

As a rule, smaller shoes are easier to walk on. If close to a size break, choose larger shoes if you have long legs, wear a hefty pack, regularly break trail, or have light, fluffy snow.

Choose smaller shoes for shorter legs, denser snow or packed trails (even if new snow covers the old tracks).
