Event description

This workshop is open to all ANU researchers and communications staff and is presented in collaboration with ANU Media.

The workshop will be delivered online via Zoom.

The COVID pandemic highlighted the extent to which experts are increasingly facing online abuse designed to intimidate and silence. An Australian Science Media Centre survey recently found that around one-in-three Australian scientists reported receiving abuse on social media.

While debate and scrutiny are important, harassment and threats are unacceptable and should never be considered part of an academic's job. Harassment and online abuse can cause real and significant harms to people's well-being and professional life. But being better prepared can help empower you to feel safer and more confident about engaging in online spaces.

Join this online workshop to learn how to manage your social media safely, report online abuse and protect your own wellbeing.

The online workshop will focus on:

  • Understanding online abuse and harassment and its impact
  • How to set up your social media accounts and profiles with safety in mind.
  • How to report and manage online abuse

Speaker:

• Lyndal Byford, Director of News and Partnerships at the Australian Science Media Centre.
