Social science reflections on the Climate Services for Agriculture Program: National scale co-development of climate projections
Description
This presentation reflects on six years of social science supporting the Climate Services for Agriculture program and the development of the My Climate View tool to provide climate projections tailored to Australian farmers’. We describe how transdisciplinary collaboration resulted in better processes for tool (co)development and better understanding of farmers needs and contexts. We outline the lessons learned from exploring farmers perceptions of risk, their use of (and struggles with) climate projections, and key pathways for enabling adoption. We highlight the critical role of trust and relationships, and the importance of responsible innovation. Climate projections are only one part of helping farmers prepare for future climate change, but tools such as My Climate View are critical to supporting essential national discussions about future climate resilience, equity, learning and developing shared pathways for adaptation. Social science helps focus technology development on outcomes, user needs and enables best-practice technology development.

Dr Aysha Fleming
Aysha Fleming is a Principal Research Scientist in CSIRO, based in Hobart. Aysha has been leading the social science team in Climate Services for Agriculture for the last five years. Her focus is on climate adaptation in agriculture, fisheries and forestry, and using participatory processes to motivate behaviour change.
Dr Emma Jakku
Emma Jakku is a Senior Research Scientist in CSIRO, based in Brisbane. Emma applies her expertise in the sociology of science and technology to help improve the effectiveness of technology development, implementation and adoption. She examines the social and institutional context of digital transformation and responsible innovation in Australian agriculture.
