Socially Engaged Art for Beginners

Run by western suburbs based artist, Jacqui Gordon, this program will begin with an introduction to what Socially Engaged Art is and some of the history and theory surrounding it. Socially Engaged Art focuses on collaboration, participation and relationships, using art as a way to connect with people, places and communities.

The first five sessions will introduce new ideas, use play and experimentation, and spend time getting to know one another. Through discussion, creative exercises and collaborative projects, participants will explore how art can build connections between people, places and communities.

The second five sessions will build on what the group has learnt and develop their own Socially Engaged Art project together. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of Socially Engaged Art, practical experience of collaborative creative processes, and a project developed with others.

You may be someone who is curious about contemporary art but has been a bit intimidated by it, or studying art in VCE and wondering if you would like to keep doing it. You may be fresh out of art school and looking for a project to get involved in, or simply someone who would like to connect with other local creatives. No previous experience with any type of art required.
