Event description

Dialogues to Co-Discover Tāmaki-Bioregion's Potential Solar Future

When we benefit from what is given freely, like sunlight or water, we enter into an unspoken agreement of reciprocity and responsibility with the places that our lives depend on, that all life depends on.

Living Systems Perspective

Solar technology is cheaper and smarter than ever before. Transport, homes, industry, buildings, and businesses are electrifying. Smart local grids, demand management, and solar hot water are system multipliers. Solar sales and grid power prices are rising. However carbon emissions, biodiversity collapse, economic fragility, community fragmentation, and social inequality are increasing too!

  • How can we make the most of the opportunities solar energy presents?
  • How can we mitigate the damage and waste caused by our current processes?
  • What approach is most beneficial to energy consumers and their resilience, in the short and the long term?
  • What ripple effects could we co-create for solar interventions to benefit local economies, local communities, and our local ecosystems, over time?

The Invitation

Solar energy has driven Tāmaki Makaurau over millennia, and this created the thriving ecosystem of forests, water ways, harbours and wildlife, the abundance that attracts all people to settle and develop here. Our future requires us to seize this opportunity to Solarise Tāmaki and realise our unique potential to be an innovation powerhouse.

What are the right relationships, processes and conditions for this to happen?

Whakaora, invites professionals, Council, Businesses, and NGO’s, communities, built environment and energy sector all those with a vested interest in the future of our City to start dialogues and workshops to co-discover the concept and value of Solarising Tāmaki . We aim to co-design an enabling pathway toward an authentic and viable sustainable future.

  • How might we unlock the solar potential of 50,000 Auckland Homes?
  • How might we harvest solar energy from 50 million m2 of Auckland commercial rooftop space?
  • Then....how can we create the will and resources, reconcile the restraints, and what are the pathways for each of the above...actions, timelines, stakeholders etc

Activated by our care for this place and Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland's Climate Plan, and to navigate the global imperatives forcing change, can we co-design effective interventions, to help achieve these goals? The aim of this workshop is to generate new ways of seeing and working that will generate the Will and QISS - Quick Inexpensive Simple and Systemic interventions to accelerate the development and transformation toward our healthy low carbon, economically resilient future city and meet our 2030 and 2050 sustainability goals. 2040 is the bicentennial of the Founding of Tamaki and it’s bioregional development.

Developmental Dialogues. Case Studies. Challenges. Co-Design the Solarising Program and QISS Responses
