The fortified wines of Australia, France, Portugal and Spain have long held an esteemed place in the world of wine.

While some wine drinkers consider fortifieds to be a curiosity, those in the know understand their relevance on a wine list or retail shelf, and the expertise required to make a truly great fortified style wines - whether it be Sherry, Madeira, Banyuls or Port.

Join Sommeliers Australia’s Bridget Raffal (Where’s Nick Wine Bar), Louella Mathews (bibo wine bar) and Loic Avril (Lucas Group) and their expert guests, as they explore the world of fortified wines during this 3 part online masterclass series.

Part 1 – Sherry & Madeira
Monday 4 October, 3-4.30pm

Part 1 of our 3 part exploration of fortified wines – this masterclass will focus on Sherry and Madeira, exploring the regions’ history, styles and methods of production.

Hosts Bridget Raffal and Louella Mathews will be joined by Iberian specialist, Scott Wasley (The Spanish Acquisition) as they work their way through a range of Sherry styles and Madeira.

6 wines will be looked at in depth during the session:

  • Manzanilla
  • Oloroso
  • Palo Cortado
  • Pedro Ximenez
  • 2 x Madeira

Part 2 – Australian Fortifieds
Sunday 10 October, 3-4.30pm

Part 2 of our 3 part exploration of fortified wines  this masterclass will focus on Australian fortified wines, exploring the history, styles and methods of production.


Hosts Loic Avril and Bridget Raffal will be joined by a special guest, winemaker Julie Ashmead (Campbells Wines) as they work their way through a range of Australian fortified styles.

6 wines will be looked at in depth during the session:

  • Fino
  • Amontillado
  • Topaque
  • Grand Muscat
  • Tawny
  • Fortified Shiraz

Part 3 – Port & Banyuls
Monday 11 October, 3-4.30pm

Part 3 of our 3 part exploration in fortified wines  this masterclass will focus on Port and Banyuls, exploring the regions’ history, styles and methods of production.

Hosts Bridget Raffal and Louella Mathews will be joined by fortified wine specialist, Simon Killeen (Simão & Co.) as they work their way through a range of Port styles and Banyuls.

6 wines will be looked at in depth during the session:

  • Tawny
  • 10 yo Tawny
  • LBV
  • Ruby
  • 2 x Banyuls

Participants who purchase Tasting Tickets will have the opportunity to look at the wines as a blind line up before joining the discussion on Zoom, where they will be guided through key markers that indicate styles within the category.
