Comparing natural capital accounting frameworks: what does the profession need to understand?

The first online seminar of the Society of Natural Capital Accounting (SoNCA).

When: Wednesday 21 October 2026, 8–9 am AEDT (Canberra and Sydney). That is 5–6 pm EDT on Tuesday 20 October (New York and Washington DC) and 11 pm–midnight CEST (central Europe).

Corporations are increasingly turning to natural capital accounting (NCA) to track the state of nature, the ecosystem services they depend on and their value. Frameworks and methods have multiplied, from the UN System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) to ISO 14054, the CSIRO Natural Capital Handbook and the work of the Natural Asset Accounting Standards Board.

This seminar puts the NCA frameworks used in the private sector side by side and compares them with each other and with the SEEA. It asks two questions:

• How do the NCA frameworks being used in the private sector compare with each other and with the SEEA?

• What would it take to make them comparable, and where can corporate practice and the SEEA each learn from the other?
