Based in Warrane/Sydney, Sophie Clague works at the intersection of sculpture and installation, navigating the subtle tensions between figuration and abstraction, drawing and object-making, stillness and movement. Her practice is grounded in a deep engagement with materiality. Where the quiet presence of matter becomes a site for exploring embodiment, memory and spatial relationships. Appearing part human, part creature, part system, her skeletal forms suggest a kind of internal architecture usually hidden beneath skin, padding, or matter. Evoking what is typically unseen– the frameworks that hold us together both physically and psychologically. Which personally for Clague, is warped through the lens of her condition of scoliosis. Distortion sees Clague anthropomorphise, soften, or even subvert expectations of strength and masculinity associated with metal. From the very nature of painted steel, the skin of her sculptures are feminized, emotionally charged gilded lilies in direct contrast to the Minimalist industrialised forms of the mid-century which emphasised form over expression with monochromatic camouflaging. Holding an MFA from the University of Sydney and a BFA (Hons) from UNSW, Clague has exhibited widely across public and commercial spaces, to include Sculpture by the Sea, Alaska Projects, and Firstdraft, and has undertaken an international residency at the Frans Masereel Centrum in Belgium. Winner of the Tom Bass Prize for Figurative Sculpture in 2018 and the Art Gallery of New South Wales' Dyason Bequest in 2017, Ossature is Clague's first solo exhibition at Eloise Cato Gallery.
