Through our helpline, our helpline and community advocates speak to Care leavers everyday who are unaware of their rights and entitlements, facing homelessness or in unsuitable housing, unhappy with professional relationships or feeling as though they do not have a voice in decisions being made about their lives.  

The training will be delivered by Scarlett Cowling, Specialist Advocate 16+. The two part course will provide an opportunity to develop your understanding on the rights and entitlements of Care leavers, and what we can do to advocate on their behalf.  

Course Outline:

1. Introducing the Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000 and the Children and Young Person’s Act.

2. Identifying categories of care leavers and their rights and entitlements 

3. Understanding common issues faced by young people leaving care

4. What makes a “effective” pathway plan?

5. Supporting young people to understand their rights, and the importance of the pathway planning process

6. Exploring the role of the advocate and how to establish an effective advocacy strategy for Care Leavers

Suitable for those with little to no knowledge on the topic, and for those who are interested in a refresher.

Important notes:

1. If you are registering your interest, this registers your commitment to both sessions. Session two will develop the learning in session one, so it is important you are able to attend both.

1. To ensure you are able to participate fully in the session, we ask that you are able to commit to one hour pre reading/activities prior to the session. Please do not sign up if you are unable to set this time aside prior to session one. Reading will be sent out in advance and you will be asked to bring this along to the workshops.
