For those who graced our Sydney club in Surry Hills!
Soul Biscuits Northern Soul Club is back for a one off 20th Anniversary All Day event starting at 3pm and finishing at 10pm. This event will be in the style of day time clubbing which is big in the UK soul circuit with clubs like MFSB in Edinburgh run by Yogi Haughton & Dave Elders.
We started Soul Biscuits back on the 28th of January 2004 upstairs at The Bar Cleveland on a Wednesday night. I (Keith) would go out fly posting the club around Surry Hills on a Tuesday night, put posters in as many shops that I could around the area and even chalk the ground at Central Station looking for like minded soul fans and it worked.
Soul Biscuits was a free event and brought in a happening with soul fans from around the world. Playing a style of music called Northern Soul which was big in the UK from the early 70s to present day. The style of music was mainly failed soul records that copied in the same style as Tamla Motown which was huge. These records became rare because they stopped pressing the vinyl records because of no interest by local DJs or low to no sales. Majorly only a 100 - 1000 records would be pressed and in some cases only a handful. One of the most expensive soul records in the world on the SOUL label which was pressed by Tamla Motown and a subsidiary of that company. Record being Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) a demo by Frank Wilson which they scrapped as they didn't like it. 1000s of other record labels had these issue and those 7' 45rpm records became the Holy Grail of the Northern Soul collectors.
So with that Soul Biscuits had some of the best DJs in Sydney and all over Australia who travelled near and far to play at this event. Sydney DJs like long standing soul guru Agent 00 Soul AKA George Coumbis. Agent 00 was a regular DJ along with Steve Bardsley and myself. Travelling DJs like Brian Williams QLD and Johnny Red Pants Warren. Soul Biscuits ran at The Bar Cleveland in Surry Hills until we moved the club to a Saturday night, but we couldn't do this at Bar Cleveland. So we found another venue in Oxford Street at The Brighton Up Bar.
This again was another smash and was by far the best little venue any soul fan could ask for. Loud music and a great dancefloor. We were always mindful of the few rules that Northern Soul brought in which was NO DRINKS ON THE DANCEFLOOR and BE RESPECTFUL OF OTHER PEOPLE DANCING. Simple rules which at any Northern Soul event worldwide is of the upmost importance. The people who go to these events have been going since the 70s & 80s in the UK. It travelled over to Australia via Nigel & Dallas in W.A when the arrived in the early 70s. It got big as a scene in the early 2000s when the first ever Northern Soul National started in Perth. This is still a yearly weekender event and is the turn of Melbourne 2023 and Adelaide in 2024. We have a very strong soul music following in Australia. If you know nothing of the Northern Soul scene you need only type in WIGAN CASINO and TWISTED WHEEL into google. These were all night clubs in Wigan and Manchester, England. These clubs played the rare soul records found in old record shops in the US or UK. These hauls of rare soul records would come to be termed as Northern Soul coined by Dave Godin who owned a record shop in England. He referred to is as "that Northern Soul" meaning the people from the north of England who travelled down to his store in London looking for these rare soul gems.
Amy & I started this venture with no idea of what to expect. What we did do though was meet some of the best people in the whole world and we are still all friends to this day.
DJs will be confirmed on Facebook event page in due time and I am sure we will have some of the best DJs from Australia playing the very best in Northern Soul from the 60s - 70s. You might even hear the odd Modern Soul tunes in the mix also and the gritty early 60s American RnB.
This event is on the first floor of Quarryman Hotel in Harris Street Pyrmont NSW
Starting at 3pm till close at 10pm.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A DAYTIME CLUB EVENT.
