Our Consent Framework: The Six Keys to ACCESS

At SoulPlay, we use the ACCESS framework to understand and practice meaningful consent. Each element is essential - all six keys are needed to unlock authentic, ethical connection:

At its best, consent is an ongoing collaboration between two or more people in constant verbal, physical, and emotional dialogue about what each other needs to willingly, safely, and pleasurably engage in an interaction with one another.

A - Affirmative: The Key of Enthusiasm We look for the presence of an enthusiastic "yes," not merely the absence of "no." Enthusiasm matters as much as the words themselves.

C - Competent: The Key of Capability All parties must have the unfettered ability, knowledge, and judgment to consent. This includes being mindful of substance use, power dynamics, and other factors that might affect decision-making.

C - Clear: The Key of Specificity Consent must be specific about activities and boundaries. Consent for one activity never implies consent for others, and where specificity is lacking, we proceed with heightened caution.

E - Explicit: The Key of Information Consent requires sharing relevant information about risk factors, relationship structures, experience levels, and emotional context that might impact the interaction.

S - Spontaneous: The Key of Freedom Consent must be freely given without pressure or coercion. We accept "no" gratefully, avoid manipulation, and create space where declining feels as comfortable as accepting.

S - Sustained: The Key of Continuity Consent is ongoing throughout any interaction and can be revoked at any time. We check in frequently, remain attentive to verbal and non-verbal cues, and stop immediately if consent is withdrawn.

Remember: All keys are necessary, they must be freely given, can be withdrawn at any time, and require ongoing respect. Different situations may require different handling, and having the keys is a privilege, not an entitlement.
