Event description

Join the City of Adelaide on an AWEsome walking tour to discover natural wonders of the City’s South East Park Lands.  Learn how the Council is working in partnership with environmental volunteers, citizen scientists and the Kaurna community to help ensure that the Park Land’s biodiversity is conserved and further enhanced for our future generations.  Highlights include:

Learn about the significance and resulting impact of the first ever cultural burn conducted in a Capital City

Gain first hand insight into the awe-inspiring big experiment occurring in Victoria Park/Pakapakanthi where Green Pakapakanthi volunteer citizen scientists are testing the use of the Japanese Miyawaki ‘pocket forest’ planting technique

Be awed by the 3.2 hectare wetlands, a flood mitigation project helping reduce major flooding over 5 council areas whilst doubling as a City sanctuary for a plethora of diverse birdlife

Explore a nationally endangered Grey Box Grassy Woodland ecosystem containing a high diversity of remnant native plant species. If it is your lucky day, you may also spot the very rare Chequered Copper Butterfly as you visit the Victoria Park Grasslands Biodiversity Trail

Upload your photo observations on the INaturalist app during the tour and help bolster our knowledge of the Adelaide Park Land’s flora, fauna and fungi. Join over 750,000 other citizen scientists, scientists and naturalists working together across the globe to record and share information on Earth’s biodiversity.

Take some nature home with you in the form of a free native plant handed out to all the AWEsome walkers, courtesy of the City of Adelaide’s Biodiversity Team.
