Description

Have you ever wanted to discover buried artefacts?

Southern Ports, in partnership with Notre Dame University, is holding five community digs at the heritage-listed Port of Albany Pilot Station.

The Pilot Station was used by marine pilots from the late 1800s through to the mid-20th century playing an important role in Albany's maritime history.

Each dig will run for 2.5 hours, with participants working alongside archaeologists to uncover more of the site's past. Artefacts found during the dig will help tell the story of life at the Pilot Station, as part of its revitalisation.

What do I need to wear?
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and enclosed shoes. Please also bring a hat and sunscreen.

Yes, you can bring a snack with you. Water will be available, but we recommend you bring an enclosed drink bottle. Please note this is an alcohol, smoking and vape free event.

Will people with mobility issues be able to participate?
Due to uneven ground onsite, access to the Pilot Station and participation in the dig may be challenging for people with mobility issues. Participants should have a general level of fitness, similar to what is required for activities such as gardening at home. If you have any questions or would like to discuss accessibility, please email us at comms@southernports.com.au.

Can I bring children?
No, we ask that children under 16 do not attend this dig due to the work involved.

Can my teenager participate in the dig?
We recommend that participants are 16 years old and older to ensure that they can follow the instructions provided by the archaeology team.
