What is Speaker Series? 

Palliative Care Tasmania’s ‘Compassionate Communities Speaker Series’ is a great mix of industry experts covering specialty topics in end-of-life care including diverse topics such as legal, guardianship, finance, mental health, grief and more. This is your chance to access specialty information that informs the broader supports available for someone diagnosed with a terminal illness/ who is older and frail and for those that are supporting/ caring for them.

Guest Speaker: David Cherry 

David Cherry is a Clinical and Forensic Psychologist who has been working in the field for over 40 years. He has a particular interest in how to have difficult conversations with children, young people and adults, including when delivering difficult news. David also developed The Occasional Counsellor ™ training that he has delivered all around Australia, which is for people who are not employed in a counselling role but are called upon to support others who are acutely emotionally distressed.

Topic: How To Have Difficult Conversations

Join us for this one-hour free, live, online session with renowned Clinical and Forensic Psychologist David Cherry

David will explore with us:

  • how to structure a difficult conversation and find a positive purpose;
  • the need to be clear about your own goals in a potentially difficult conversation;
  • the importance of empathy and the different ways of empathically connecting with others;
  • delivering difficult news and
  • supporting people (of any age) who are acutely emotionally distressed.

This session is suitable for PCT Members and anyone who would like to know more about having difficult conversations, including health professionals,
nurses, doctors, allied health, primary health providers, aged care and home care providers, community service professionals, educators, volunteers across and the sector, carers or family and friends.

There will be opportunities to ask David questions within the session. The session will not be recorded.
