Improving End-of-Life Care: Principles and Priorities in Care with Anna Nicholas

About the Speaker: 

Anna has worked for the last 24 years in Palliative Care. In this time, Anna has worked in Clinical, Managerial and Education, although predominantly in NSW and as a Clinical Nurse Consultant in the Community, Residential Aged Care, and Acute Care Setting.

Since moving back to Tasmania, Anna has worked as a Clinical Nurse Consultant in the Palliative Care Team at the Royal Hobart Hospital. She is currently working in a project role to improve end-of-life care in the acute care setting and has developed a statewide end-of-life care plan. Anna has a particular interest in dying in the Acute Care setting and how we can improve this experience for both the patients and their families.

Anna has completed her Master’s Degree in Palliative Care through Flinders University and is a current board member of PCNA since 2021.

What to expect:

This is for Health Professionals working in or have an interest in palliative care. It will be suitable for those working in the community, district hospitals or providing clinical care and support to people in the Tasmanian community. 

Topics will include:

  • Nursing care at the end of life
  • Principles and priorities in care
  • Communication in care settings
  • End-of-life care planning
  • End-of-Life Project Update
  • Palliative care medication
  • Ethical decision making
  • Thinking about and making clinical decisions i.e. hospital transfers 

The presentation will be followed by a 15-minute Q&A session where attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions directly to Anna.
