Spiny Rice Flower Conservation Project

Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) together with Trust for Nature invites you to participate in roadside stewardship for the conservation of the Spiny Rice Flower, Pimelea spinescens.

The Spiny Rice Flower is a critically endangered species under the EPBC Act 1999 and the FFG Act 1988 and are primarily found in western and northern Victoria with most populations in fragmented landscapes on roadsides and railway lines.

With grant funding received by DTP from the Pimelea Conservation Trust Fund, together with your participation in ecological monitoring and seed collection, will assist with conserving this highly threatened plant species

This project will begin with a presentation by Dr. Debbie Reynolds, a grassland ecologist, with focus on the Volcanic Plains ecosystem where the Spiny Rice-flower is found, followed by monitoring, recording and the placement of bags for seed collection activities on the roadside of Rokewood Shelford Rd.

Note - Dress appropriately for the weather conditions ie. closed shoes, coats, gloves, hats, sunscreen etc, water and snacks. Some volunteers will need to be able to get down on the ground, so knee pads and/or foldable chairs is recommended. A Hi-Viz safety vest shall be provided and must be always worn while working in the field.
