Description

Spoonful is an intimate disability-led community event that centres pride, resource sharing, and showcases artistic excellence. The event is led and delivered by emerging disabled artists Lulu Barkell + Ampersand (&) who work and live on Gadigal and Wangal Lands.

This event is part of Inner West Council's Inclusion Festival. View the full program of free events

Spoonful includes art installations, performances and open-mics, community whiteboards, networking, and creative stations where patrons can draw, write love letters, musings, complaints, or even letters to parliamentarians about their lived experiences; especially with recent NDIS cuts! Sign petitions, share mutual-aid callouts, and connect with community resources.

Attendees can contribute to an existing mutual-aid sheet and join ‘Sydney Spoons’, an established community group chat led by the producers, centred around community care, un-gatekeeps healthcare secrets, and encourages a sporadic “does anyone know a good endocrinologist?” direct message at random hours of the day.

Spoonful acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout so-called 'Australia' and acknowledges that this event will take place on unceded Gadigal Country. We pay our respect to all Elders past, present and emerging and extend respect to all First Nations Peoples in attendance. Spoonful would also like to acknowledge First Nations creatives as the original storytellers and artists, and we celebrate their continuing connection and contribution to Country, culture and community. Always was, Always will be, Aboriginal Land.

  • Alt Text for this Page

A vibrant, scanned lino print event poster, digitally coloured using the colours of the Disability Pride flag, against a pink background. The word ‘Spoonful’ appears diagonally across the centre in large, bold, black lettering. A large black spoon is scooping up playful, colourful illustrations of everyday objects, including a yellow tin can, a red animal-shaped paperclip, a red apple, a green battery, a blue fish and white pearl-like shapes. The date “12 December 2026” appears at the top, with “Supported by Inner West” displayed underneath the event title. The overall aesthetic is playful, quirky, colourful and collage-inspired, with a handmade printmaking feel.

Lulu finds catharsis in sharing personal anecdotes and stories, seeking connections within niche and underrepresented communities. Their work centres on themes of identity and embodiment, with their artistry deeply rooted in lived experience. Lulu aims to further develop their individual practice by creating multisensory, immersive, and accessible performance work that integrates tactile art, sound, scent, and intentionally unpalatable design elements.
