Description
The program opens with the meditative Prelude from J. S. Bach’s Cello Suite No. 2, arranged for solo flute. We then journey to kunanyi / Mount Wellington with composer Tracey Patten’s Seeking the Octopus Tree: a joyful musical outing for flute and vibraphone inspired by the search for the Octopus Tree and its distinctive, beautiful roots. The work is written and performed by Tracey Patten on vibraphone and Maria Hincapie Duque on flute. The program continues with a selection from Hindemith’s Acht Stücke für Flöte, followed by Fürstenau’s charming Bouquet des Tons, bringing a delightful combination of wit, drama, elegance and lyricism to the afternoon. Tobias Chisnall performs Telemann’s Fantasia No. 1 in B-flat major for solo violin, a work that highlights the expressive possibilities of a single melodic instrument through its contrasting characters and textures. The program concludes with Naomi Dodd’s Courting Birds for flute and violin, taking us back to the hush, in a playful and evocative work that brings the afternoon to a close.
