🌧️ The Spirit of Rain Raga & Tea

I always remember the rain arriving just after Navaratri when I was in India ~ even following some of the hottest, driest periods, when the land had been longing for water.

There is something beautiful about this seasonal transition: the first rains nourishing the earth, refreshing the air and bringing new life to the forests and surrounding landscape.

With the consistent rain we've been experiencing here in the Northern Rivers, I've decided to embrace this season and call our final gathering of the year Rain Raga & Tea ~ an invitation to appreciate the beauty of the rain just as much as the sunshine, and to listen more deeply to the rhythms of nature as they unfold around us.

For me, this is also at the heart of Indian Classical Raga.

Raga is not simply a collection of notes or a melody to be performed. It is a living musical language through which we can tune into the qualities of a particular time, season, atmosphere and feeling.

As musicians immersed in this ancient tradition, we seek to respond to the world around us ~ allowing the mood of the landscape, the movement of the weather and the feeling of the moment to inform the music we share.

A raga can evoke the intimacy of dusk, the freshness of the monsoon, the stillness of a quiet morning or the longing and devotion held within the human heart. Through its melodic framework, we explore a deeper relationship between sound, emotion and the natural rhythms of life.

And so, rather than waiting for the weather to be perfect, we welcome the rain as part of the experience itself ~ listening to its rhythms, feeling the atmosphere it creates and allowing the music to unfold in relationship with the landscape.

Together with the mindful tasting of high-quality Chinese Gōngfū Tea from Yunnan Province, this becomes an opportunity to slow down, listen deeply and reconnect with the living world around us.

As the property is in a natural setting, we'll keep a close eye on the weather and creek crossings in the lead-up to the gathering. If conditions make access unsafe or unsuitable, we may need to cancel or relocate to an alternative venue, potentially in the Ocean Shores area. Registered participants will be kept informed of any changes.
