Spring Weaving Circle
Description
Join Helen from Earthstar Magic and Yonke from Temples Of The Forest for a Seasonal Weaving Circle, held in a beautiful bush property in Navigators, Ballarat.
In this 3 hour workshop you will be introduced to different fibers for weaving, and how to harvest, dry and store them. You'll learn all of the skills needed to create your very own twined basket or bowl.
All materials for this workshop will be supplied. There will be a selection of brightly coloured and natural raffia available for you to use. You will have complete freedom to choose the shape, dimensions and colour of your weaving.
Yonke and I will guide you throughout the weaving process and be there to answer any technical questions as you allow your creativity to flow. There is no right or wrong in this workshop - only what is right for you!
Weaving is very intuitive; it requires us to trust the process. Unlike knitting or crochet, there is no pattern to follow. Vessels are created by feel. This is a great craft for dropping out of the monkey mind and into the creative flow.
During the first hour of the workshop, you will learn about selecting and foraging plants to weave from your local environment. From harvesting to drying and preparing them for projects. We will then introduce this session's weaving technique and materials, and get everyone started. The remaining two hours of the workshop will be allocated as weaving time, where we can all work on our projects, ask questions and share stories (and songs!).
Herbal tea will be available as well as some simple snacks to keep us nourished as we work. Weaving together our stories individually and as a group. This is a place for crafting, community, conversation and creativity.
Everyone will go home with their own unique piece of art, as well as the skills and knowledge to be able to continue working on their basket at home should they wish.
For this Spring Weaving Circle we will be gathering outdoors if the weather is dry. Please dress warmly and bring along a campchair for sitting if you can. If the weather is too wet / cold we will gather indoors in our cosy space with the fire lit. Cushions for floor sitting are provided, but should you require anything else to be comfy please bring it along.

- Do I need any previous weaving experience?
No, this workshop is suitable for beginners.
- Are all materials provided?
Yes! All weaving materials for the workshop are provided, as well as resources on where to purchase items after the workshop and guidance on how to forage materials in your local area.
- Do I need to bring anything?
Just your lovely self, and perhaps something to sit on to ensure you are comfortable.
- Can I attend if I haven't been to any of your previous Seasonal Weaving Circles?
Absolutely! We welcome all newcomers. We strive to share different skills at each of the sessions we offer which means you can come along to one work shop or come along to them all and experience a variety of ways to weave and connect with nature.
- I came along to your last Seasonal Weaving Circle, will the content be the same?
We aim to offer a different style of weaving at each of our Seasonal Weaving Circles so that you can build your skills and begin your own creative wild basketry journey. So, the content for each session will be different, but the skills can be built upon or learned as part of a stand alone workshop.
- Will I leave the workshop with a completed basket?
Probably not! Weaving is a skill that takes time. These sessions are designed to teach the fundamentals of each style of basket as you begin your weaving journey. Woven pieces will likely need to be completed at home - it is the perfect craft for long winter evenings by the fire!
- Will I be able to take home enough materials from the workshop to complete my basket?
If you are hoping to create a large basket, you will need to purchase or forage materials to complete it, and resources on this will be provided during the workshop. We will send each of you home with enough material to keep you going until you are able to source your own. We have intentionally kept the cost of this workshop low to make it accessible to people, which limits the resources we have available.

This workshop is designed for adults, but young people aged 12+ are welcome to join us if they have a keen interest in weaving. Please contact us directly for more information.

All participants will be sent a link to join our private Facebook group where we can share our work and ask questions.
- Can I bring along projects that were started at one of your previous workshops?
Of course - we LOVE show and tell! Please do bring along your weaving to share with the group, we'd all really love to see it.
