Science Revealed Dean's Lecture Series Featuring Dr. Mike Wotton
Event description
Dr. Greg Anderson, Dean of the Faculty of Science at Thompson Rivers University is pleased to invite you to Science Revealed, the Dean’s Lecture Series featuring Dr. Mike Wotton from the University of Toronto. The lecture series brings renown and captivating scientists from various scientific disciplines to the TRU Kamloops campus to reveal scientific discoveries and their application, making science accessible to audiences with diverse backgrounds and interests.
Dr. Mike Wotton is a senior research scientist with the Canadian Forest Service and has been positioned at the University of Toronto for the last fifteen years where he is an associate professor. His research has centred on improving our understanding of the key environmental processes that directly influence wildfire behaviour and how fire management in Canada will be influenced by climate change. As an applied scientist, he spends considerable time working directly with fire management agencies to help incorporate fire science into meaningful information products to support wildfire management decision-making. During his talk, Dr. Wotton will describe some advancements in fire behaviour modelling that are being incorporated into the next generation of the Canadian Forest Fire Behaviour Prediction System - a system used by fire managers throughout Canada for more than three decades. He will use this opportunity to discuss the information that fire management agencies need to support their operational decision making. This will emphasize appropriate scale and the role of situational uncertainty, which both play an important role in fire management decision-making.
