Discover the power of breath as a therapeutic tool in this engaging and practical workshop. Utilizing breath work in Clinical Practice introduces clinicians to evidence-based breath work techniques that support emotional regulation, stress reduction, and trauma recovery. Participants will explore the science behind breath work, including its impact on the nervous system, heart rate variability, and overall well-being. Through hands-on demonstrations, participants will learn practical exercises that can be seamlessly integrated into clinical sessions to promote grounding, mindfulness, and resilience for diverse client populations. The workshop will also cover how to assess client readiness, address contraindications, and ensure ethical and effective implementation of breath work interventions. As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to: 

  • Identify the physiological and psychological benefits of breath work as a therapeutic intervention to regulate the nervous system and reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety, and trauma. 
  • Explain the science behind breath work techniques, including their impact on heart rate variability, the vagus nerve, and emotional regulation. 
  • Demonstrate at least three practical breath work exercises that can be safely integrated into clinical practice with diverse client populations. 
  • Assess client readiness and appropriateness for breath work interventions based on clinical presentations and individual needs. 
  • Develop strategies to introduce and incorporate breath work into existing treatment plans to support mindfulness, grounding, and emotional resilience. 
  • Identify ethical considerations and potential contraindications when using breath work in clinical settings, ensuring safe and effective implementation
  • This workshop meets 1.5 Category 1 credits towards the ethics requirement for the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiners.
