Stanley Children’s Art Revival….. We’re back!

Stanley Community Playgroup in conjunction with local artists will deliver a series of workshops specifically for children. Indigo Shire has provided us with dedicated funding that will allow a wide range art experiences for local children. There is a small fee to help cover cost of materials.
For younger children art experiences are open ended and based on exploring mediums and materials. Older children can use more complex strategies and diverse materials to discover ways to make artworks. We are offering the following workshops that are age appropriate.

All workshops begin at 10:30am, apart from 3-5 years second session at 11:20am.

3-5 year old workshops

Exploring Clay

Clay is a tactile and natural medium that is perfect for young children. We will model how clay can be prepared and made into different shapes, how to smooth clay, and how to join one clay piece to another. They can experience the texture and feel in this introductory session.

Easel Painting

Young children will use non-toxic water based colours to paint standing at an easel. This is an opportunity for children to experience the medium of paint with age appropriate equipment. For young children painting tends to be more a gross motor activity and the easel allows them to explore mark making with large strokes and brushes…please wear suitable clothing!

Collage

Children will be given a large variety of paper and cardboard, some patterned and some magazine pages. They will be offered either an easel or a table to work at, whichever they feel most comfortable with. They will use tearing, ripping and cutting to make shapes for their collage. They will use a water based glue and brushes to fix the shapes to their paper. This is an early multi media experience.

Box Construction

Using recycled packaging is a great way to allow young children to make three dimensional objects. It is an early sculpture experience and they will develop skills using scissors, masking tape and boxes of all shapes and sizes to build whatever takes their fancy.

6-9 year old workshops

Hand building with clay

Children will be introduced to simple hand building with stoneware clay. They will begin with a basic bowl form and learn how to join clay properly using the pinch pot method and coils.  When the form is complete they can try decorative mark making on the outer surface. 

For the younger children their work will be allowed to dry over the week, then finished with PVA to preserve it……except if they are really keen and want to take it home on the day!

Coloured ink portraits

The coloured ink portrait workshop is a mixed-media art activity which teaches children about portraiture, emotional expression, and fluid dynamics using a straw-blowing paint technique. 

This expressive ink-blowing project is an excellent foundation for young learners, as it naturally builds several fundamental artistic skills using a variety of methods (drawing and painting) and a variety of media (pencils, oil pastels, black water resistant ink, coloured inks on watercolour paper) 

Steampunk workshop

Exploring the wonderful world of Steampunk Art!

Students will begin by constructing their sculpture with recycled materials and cog wheels using hot glue which the teacher will manage. Once the sculpture is put together students will paint their first coat and let it dry while they have morning tea and a little outdoor play. 

Participants will then use the dry brush technique to apply the second and third coats of paint to produce the desired rustic antique effect.

Introduction to Beading

Students are invited to explore the variety of things that can be made with beads. All the equipment will be provided to make keychains, necklaces, bracelets, earrings or whatever wild and wonderful constructions they like. There are hundreds of beads to choose from in every shape, size and colour!  Students will learn the technical skills for making their desired object, with support and guidance on hand for tricky adjustments. 

10-14 year old workshops

Hand building Clay Techniques

For the older children there will be an option to underglaze and bisque fire their completed piece, if so desired, for an additional $10 payable on the day of the workshop.

Make your own custom zine!

This workshop teaches the essentials of making a zine in the Quatro style. Participants will be provided with construction materials including paper, fine liners, markers, collage and basic printing materials. The session will use the theme of Spring as an introductory idea, with collage materials having a spring leaning motif. Students are encouraged to explore what this season means to them in whatever way they wish. It could be expressed through small drawings, poems or a favourite spring recipe for sharing with a friend. Alternatively, they are welcome to customise their zine to suit their interest.

Note: Those of you with children under 5 will need to stay to assist ensure your child is comfortable in a new environment.

If you are more than 10 minutes late to the workshop, you will not be able to participate.

There will be morning tea provided to encourage families and children to make new connections within the community.

The workshops will provide an opportunity for children to explore different mediums suited to their developmental level under the guidance of professional art educators.
