STANO In Between Silence, where we really exist

Event description

DIRECT FROM ACCLAIMED SEASONS IN IRELAND, UK, USA, JAPAN

'a sensory experience and a master class in storytelling, using beautiful musical soundscapes to subtly underscore the beautiful complexity of the human experience.' Rosie Vaughn theasy.com New York

In Between Silence, where we really exist
is a collection of intimate personal stories by leading Irish writers and artists including Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones/The Wire), Patrick Bergin (Sleeping with the Enemy), Roddy Doyle (Man Booker Prize Winner / The Commitments), Anne Enright (Man Booker Prize Winner), Paula Meehan (Ireland Professor of Poetry), Connie Roberts (Patrick Kavanagh Award Winner), Ron Carter (Legendary Jazz Bassist, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock),  Marie Howe (New York State Poet) and all who have a story to tell, presented in a unique film format by groundbreaking Irish composer STANO.

STANO creates a piece of music for each participant. He doesn’t hear the story and the participant doesn’t hear the music until they start to record. His desire is to capture the spontaneous response of each person to the music and the impact it has on their delivery.

STANO’s interest is in rediscovering the power of the shared experience of music and storytelling, of listening, of allowing our imagination to bring us on our own journey while engaging with the voice of the storyteller.

Both Roddy Doyle and Joseph O’Connor said of their experience recording their stories that  with In Between Silence “STANO  has created a new art form”.

In Between Silence, where we really exist launched at the International Literature Festival Dublin and made its North American debut with a three week run in the Barrow Street Theatre NYC. This ongoing collection of now over 150 stories, has since played at festivals throughout Ireland, the UK, New York and in 2023 Perth WA. In 2024 the collection screens in Tokyo, Melbourne, Vic. and Perth WA.

The collection is housed in the Boole Library, University College Cork alongside the Porcelain Book which accompanies the collection.

“......Lyrically and philosophically, if Sam Beckett was around today, I’d say he’d fancy a spell in the studio doing spoken word with STANO......” Hot Press
“STANO is an unseen but very strong force inside the artistic life of this country” THEO DORGAN
“Maintaining flexible definitions of cinema, theater, and storytelling is a valuable component of keeping an open mind to the arts." Joseph Charnitski (exeunt Magazine New York)
“There are myriad ways to tell stories, but a voice in the dark has a proximate visceral effect. Listening becomes heightened while the eyes follow the trace of – in this case – intimate recollections including stories passed on through networks of blood and empathy. ‘In Between Silence, where we really exist’ is a collection of true stories recorded by chiefly Irish writers, produced by Irish composer and one-time Dublin punk scenester STANO to music of his own making”. K. Krombie (Stage Buddy – New York)
