Star talk: Discover your night sky during Victoria's Seniors Festival 2024
Event description
Discover the amazing universe with the bush astronomer and Gordon local, Darren Bellingham. Learn about our own galaxy, the milky way, other nearby galaxies, the Sun, planets and the Moon. Ask those questions you always wondered about like how can I see an aurora? And what is a black hole? A visual presentation will be followed by telescope viewing in the back yard at Gordon Hall if the weather is favourable.
This event is free for seniors (60years+) courtesy of funding support from Moorabool Shire Council as a part of Victorian Seniors Festival 2024. Under 60s can purchase a ticket for $5/adult or $12 for a family.
Friends of Paddock Creek Reserve in Gordon are sponsoring this event in conjunction with Moorabool Shire Council as a part of a program of activities for Senior’s month of October. Moorabool Shire Council is supporting the event so that Seniors can attend for free.
Friends of Paddock Creek have been running stargazing events in Paddock Creek Reserve since August 2023. With initial funding from Moorabool Shire Council, free stargazing nights were held in conjunction with the Ballarat Astronomical Society. In 2024, we have held regular stargazing nights on a paid basis. In 2023 our group was able to purchase its own telescope with the assistance of a Stronger Communities grant organised through Catherine King’s office. More recently, Moorabool Shire Council has provided additional support in the form of a grant to purchase a secure carry case for the telescope.
