Staying safe from online scams and fraud

John Parsons is the country's leading authority on cyber-safety for children, and works nationwide with young people, parents, the police, teachers and the health sector.

John is an internet safety and risk assessment consultant. He is New Zealand's leading authority on cyber safety for children and has written a book for parents on how to keep kids safe online.

Parsons has toured New Zealand extensively in recent years sharing advice on how not to attract online predators, and tips for parents and children on navigating the minefield that is social media. He also supports older adults who are using the internet and vulnerable targets.

John said senior citizens are easy targets and cyber scammers want to steal their money.

"New Zealanders are frequently the target of international scams and fraud attempts. I have worked with senior citizens who have lost $300,000 to $400,000."

In his seminars, John will teach older people to understand how criminals think so they can recognise their own vulnerability. He hopes this will show them how to shed their vulnerability, because this can contribute to making them a victim of crime.

John has a few common sense strategies for the elderly on how to deal with cold callers, tradespeople and rubbish containing personal data.

He also works with senior citizens who are the victims of cyber-crime and, in some instances, has met victims who have lost their life savings and property.

During his day in Rotorua, he will be presenting a toolbox of highly practical, realistic and proven strategies for children and adults to get the most from digital technology while remaining safe.

We are offering two workshops on Tuesday 3 December. The first, at 10:30am, is for adults with a focus on keeping individuals safe from fraud and scams.
