Stella: You get proud by practicing

Event description

When activist, writer and comedian Stella Young died suddenly at the age of just 32 her family, friends and the disability community around the world were bereft. Stella’s sassy attitude, wit and humour had helped communicate issues relating to disability rights in a way that cut through to the politicians and the community at large, regardless of their connection to disability. Now eight years after her death she is still beloved by the disability community yet young people – arguably those she resonated most with, have only a sketchy knowledge of her life and work.

Filmmaker Sarah Barton was a friend and colleague and is now working on a feature documentary about Stella Young’s life and work. Members of the disability community are invited to this once only “work in progress” private screening of “Stella; You Get Proud by Practicing”. After the screening, Sarah will be joined by panelists Liz Wright and Jen Hargraves from Women with Disability Victoria to discuss what matters most about remembering Stella’s life and impact through this film.

Early work on this documentary has been supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants.

This event is an exclusive private screening for the disability advocacy sector and will not be recorded.
