STEM Hour: Connect, learn, grow
Food for thought – philosophical inquiry with children
“How does a cow turn into a sausage?”; “Why is it ok to eat cows but not whales?”; “Can I send my sandwich to a child who’s really hungry?”
As part of National Science Week, our webinar panel will discuss how children’s critical questions can be addressed in an honest and age-appropriate way that encourages further inquiry and supports a constructive world view. Focusing on philosophical inquiry and critical thinking in early childhood settings, Clarissa Seeto-Regueira, centre director, Benjamin Kilby, teacher and philosopher, Alex Forbes, STEM teacher, and Jessica Danaher, dietitian and researcher, will share ideas for critical reflection on the food we eat: Where does it come from? How is it made? Do all families eat the same foods?
Date: 16 August 2021
Time: 11am - 12pm AEST
Objectives:
- Discussing what philosophical inquiry looks like in an early childhood setting
- Providing ideas for implementation of philosophical inquiry in STEM exploration
- Sharing examples of food-related questions and how these could be addressed in an age-appropriate way
The webinar is scheduled to run for one hour and includes a Q&A session.
