Topic: Trust and estate planning in a changing tax environment: Family trust elections and the proposed minimum tax

Understanding the impact of family trust distribution tax and the proposed minimum tax on discretionary trusts

Australia's trust taxation regime continues to evolve, creating new challenges for advisers, trustees and estate planning practitioners. This session will discuss the latest developments affecting trusts and succession planning, with a particular focus on family trust elections (FTEs), family trust distribution tax (FTDT), and the proposed minimum tax on discretionary trusts.

The session will cover:

  • The purpose and operation of FTEs

  • Identify when FTDT can arise and how to avoid common traps

  • Assess the impact of the proposed minimum tax measures on discretionary trusts.

About the Presenter | Robyn Jacobson

Robyn Jacobson is the Senior Advocate at the National Tax & Accountants' Association, where, as the primary advocacy contact, she represents members in NTAA's engagement with government, regulators and other key stakeholders. This includes The Treasury, Australian Taxation Office (ATO), Tax Practitioners Board (TPB), Tax Ombudsman, Board of Taxation and professional bodies on tax policy and administration matters.

With nearly 35 years in the accounting and tax profession, spanning public practice, tax training and advocacy, Robyn champions improvements to our tax system.

Beyond advocacy, Robyn is a conference/webinar presenter, keynote speaker, podcaster (host of NTAA's Tax Tales), columnist and social media commentator, and is regularly quoted in the media.

Robyn co-chairs the ATO Tax Practitioner Stewardship Group, and is a member of the ATO National Tax Liaison Group and many other working groups.

Robyn is a Fellow of NTAA, CA ANZ and CPA Australia, and is a Chartered Tax Adviser of The Tax Institute.
