Topic: Beyond the baton pass - The evolution of succession and governance in multi-generational family enterprises

Historically succession in family enterprises was often viewed as a relatively straightforward transfer of leadership, ownership or control from one generation to the next. However, as families, ownership groups and family enterprises become more complex, many traditional assumptions about succession are being challenged.

Drawing on recent research and a whitepaper co-authored through the UHNW Institute, this session explores how succession is evolving from a focus on a single successor towards a broader concept of continuity, governance and stewardship. The discussion will examine the growing importance of ownership readiness, governance capability, decision-making structures and the role advisors play in helping families navigate multi-generational transitions.

About the Presenter | Daniel Trimarchi TEP

Daniel Trimarchi is National Lead of Family Dynamics & Governance at KPMG Australia. With more than 17 years of experience across Australia, the UK and Canada, he advises business families, family offices and high-net-worth individuals on governance, succession, continuity and decision-making. Daniel serves as Co-Chair of the STEP Business Families Special Interest Group Global Steering Committee and is a Faculty Member and Advisory Board Member of the UHNW Institute. He was recently recognised in Family Capital's Global Top 50 Family Enterprise Advisors and is a full TEP member of STEP.
